Information
In 1913, at the National Library there was opened a
reading room for children. Nowadays the library is the Central Library providing
library and bibliographic services for children and young people. It also serves
as a methodological and coordination center for libraries of Ulyanovsk and
Ulyanovsk oblast, providing services for children and young people, and as a
regional repository of literature for children and young people.
The library is located in a unique building, based on a
special project. The four-storied building with total area of about 4000 sq.m.
built of glass and aluminum, wood and plastic, marble and granite. Here the
visitors can find a department of arts, a department of reading rooms, a Service
Department for preschool and primary-school children, an info-bibliographic
department, a circulation department for teenagers and young people, as well as
a computer room.
The Ulyanovsk regional library stuff regularly organizes
literary games and quizzes for children and young people, meetings with writers
and poets, interviews with local historians, lessons and consultations on
culture, as well as puts up theatrical performances.
One of the major tasks of the library is to enhance the principles of tolerance
and morality.
The library employees carry out methodical and consulting
work with the staff of the regional libraries, providing services for children
and young people: organize seminars and workshops, reviews, consultations and
selection of literature.
Library stocks and services
The library has a unique collection of books for children, teenagers and young
people - about 240 thousand books, including about 1,840 publications in foreign
languages.
The library has a stock of rare books and a collection of
more than 140 books with autographs of famous writers (Gianni Rodari, Leo Kassil,
Agnes Barto, M. Shaginian, M. Polezhayeva, etc.), a diverse stock of
encyclopedias, dictionaries and reference books, including the 20-volumes of
“Britannica”, Oxford Encyclopedia and others. There are about 250 newspapers and
magazines. The library has a valuable stock of bibliographical aids, as well as
audio and video aid, CD-ROMs.
The library visitors have access to Internet information
resources and a full-text database of the reference and legal system "Garant".
Here they also provide such services as photocopy, laser
printing, typing on a computer, scanning, recording information on CD-R and
CD-RW.
Today, the Ulyanovsk regional library for children and young people is a
creative laboratory, where various methods of work with children, including
innovative ones, are being tested.
Every third Sunday of the month the library hosts a
family event called "Book weekend”. The librarians prepare games, contests and
expressive poetry readings, masterclasses in Applied Arts for children and
adults, conduct reviews of new educational literature and books for children,
tell about the fascinating children's magazines and convince the parents of the
necessity and regularity of family reading.
Every fourth Sunday of the month the library holds a
promotional action "Family +", designed to contribute to the creative
development of children, including the children with disabilities. Here they
also organized interactive exhibitions and creative workshops.
Centers of the library
Center of
the legal culture of children, teenagers and young people.
The Center aims to enhance the legal education of
teenagers and young people, to promote the crime prevention, to explain the
children and young people the benefits of law-abiding and positive-oriented
lifestyle. They provide information on legal and economic issues, on activities
of various organizations protecting the rights of children and young people,
defending their interests in every situation, helping to solve many problems of
children and young people.
Center of
spiritual and moral education of children and young people of the Ulyanovsk
oblast.
The center was established to provide spiritual and moral, civic and patriotic
education for children and young people of the region.
Here was formed a stock of documents of spiritual and
moral content. The Center's specialists render methodical and practical
assistance to the agencies providing the spiritual and moral education.
The Board of the Center includes public and religious
leaders, prominent politicians and businessmen, representatives of cultural and
educational institutions of the Ulyanovsk oblast. Their joint efforts provide a
systematic approach in providing the conditions for spiritual and moral
development of children and young people. Together they develop and implement
educational programs, new forms and methods of spiritual and moral education.
Library museums
Museum literary exhibition "Aksakov and Simbirsk”.
The exhibition presents copies of the documents testifying the fact that the
Aksakovs visited the Simbirsk province. Here one can see a fragment of letter by
Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich granting to Alexei Aksakov a plot of land in the
Simbirsk province in 1673.
Here is exhibited a portrait of Aksakov, the family coat
of arms of the ancient noble family of the Aksakovs, a description of the coat
of arms and a brief history of the genus.
The exhibition also presents the children’s crafts
thematically based on a fairy tale "The Scarlet Flower”. The significant
showpieces of the exhibition are the different editions of books by Aksakov and
literature about him. These include rare editions of books by Aksakov
"Butterflies" (1936), "Selected Works" (1949).
Museum of fairy tales
Along with dolls and books the museum of tales presents
various kinds of theater: theater of images, desktop theater of planar figures
and toys, flannelgraph theater, glove theater, Puppet Theater.
The museum of tales conducts fascinating interactive
classes, where Martha Vasilievna, the custodian of the Museum, invites the
children into the world of fairy tales and books. They organize theatrical games
and staging of tales. Children take part in quizzes, drawing and solving of
fabulous crosswords.
Festivals and
Contests
Annual regional creative competition "Scarlet Flower".
The competition is held during the year in the
following nominations: "Draw a fairy tale", "Compose a fairy tale", "Read a
fairy tale." Each year, the results of the competition are announced in October,
on the birthday of Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov.

Festival of Library theaters "Reading through a game"
The festival jury assesses the performances of Library
Theater in the nominations: "puppet show" and "theatrical show" . The experts
exchange the positive experiences in promoting books and reading through the
organization of theater in the library.
Annual All-Russia
creative contest "My Russia".
It is conducted during the school year. The pupils
express their patriotism and citizenship through writing essays, drawing a
family tree and making artistic photographs.
