"Ulyanovsk Drama Theater named after Ivan Goncharov"

The Drama Theater of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk is over two
centuries old. History of the theatre started in 1785.
The art director of the theater is
Kopylov Y.S., a People's Artist of
Russia, laureate of the International Prize n.a. K.S. Stanislavsky.
Today the troop of the Ulyanovsk regional theater brings together People’s and
Honored artists of Russia, Honored Workers of Culture, artists of the middle and
young generation. The whole collective includes more than 200 employees. There
are even family dynasties among the technical and creative staff. Many
theatre members have been working in the theater for several decades.
In 2002, Kopylov Y.S. and the leading actors of the Ulyanovsk stage: People's
Artists of Russia Boris Aleksandrov, K.I. Shadko, V.S. Sheiman and an artist
S.S. Shavlovskii were awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation. In 2003
the art director of the theater Y.S. Kopylov was awarded the International Prize
of Stanislavsky in the category "The Theater Builder”.
The Ulyanovsk Drama Theater is a permanent participant of
international and Russian festivals. Many of the theater stage plays have won
the recognition from the public in whole Russia. The Ulyanovsk Drama Theater n.a.
Ivan Goncharov is a laureate of the RF Government Prize named after Fyodor
Volkov for his contribution to theatrical art of the RF.
Every year the theater gives plays in the districts of
the Ulyanovsk Oblast. The theater was awarded the Governor’s prize "Promotion"
in the festival "Litsedej" (for the promotion of theatrical arts in the
districts of the region).
The Big stage auditorium of the Drama Theater is designed
for 667 seats, and the Small Stage hall has 120 seats.
Repertoire
Traditions of the Ulyanovsk Drama Theater n.a. Ivan Goncharov combines the
desire to speak the modern scenic language with immense respect for the
classical theater. For many years the repertoire has included large-scale
theatrical performances on works by Shakespeare, Goncharov, Ostrovsky,
Beaumarchais, Chekhov, Moliere, Goldoni, Pirandello, Gozzi, Tolstoy and many
other recognized masters of the word.
Theater performances are addressed to different age
groups of spectators.
"Postscriptum", the Small Stage of the Theater, stages
experimental works for the youth of the city.

All-Russia Theater Festival " Goncharov’s characters on
the modern stage."
The festival gave the Ulyanovsk audience a chance to get acquainted with the
leading theater troops from Tambov, Voronezh, Perm, Dzerzhinsk, Lipetsk, Orsk
and Moscow, presenting productions by Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov.
Festivals dedicated to the works of the classics, helps
theaters to retain an important mission of any of the arts – an educational one,
while viewers get the opportunity to increase their own spirituality.
Another significant milestone of cultural life of the
Ulyanovsk region has become the development of the festival "Litsedej». From a
show of actors' work in the walls of one theater, by the year 2007 it had risen
to a festival of theaters of the Ulyanovsk region, under the patronage of the
Governor-Chairman of the Government of the Ulyanovsk region S.I. Morozov.

The theater carefully preserves historical materials
reflecting the major milestones in the development of the Ulyanovsk stage. The
Ulyanovsk Theater n.a. Goncharov has inscribed several remarkable pages into the
history of Russia's Theater. Two centuries ago here worked outstanding Russian
actors P. Strepetova and Andreev-Burlak, here A. Tairov started his career as a
stage director.
The theatrical exhibition includes performances on the
Leninist theme, "Shekspiriada" of recent decades and the plays by I.A. Goncharov.
The exhibition presents photographs of performances,
actors and actresses, handbills, costumes, newspaper clippings and props.
