"Ulyanovsk regional philharmonic"

 



Ulyanovsk Philharmonic develops the classical traditions of Russian concert life: promotes classical music, maintains a high level of performing, supports the creative relationships with other Russian Philharmonic Halls. Being a center of musical culture in Ulyanovsk, the Philharmonic hosts concerts and is engaged in arranging tours, various musical concerts and festivals, performances in academic and pop genres, invites prominent domestic and foreign performers and conductors.

In addition to traditional concert activity, the Ulyanovsk Philharmonic has a lot of work on the aesthetic education of children and young people. There have been worked out the following projects: “Philharmonic for pupils” and “Philharmonic for preschoolers”  in which there are concerts of chamber music ensembles: “Volga-brass”, “Opus”, “Sadko”, “Academic – Band”, as well as a string quartet, a chamber ensemble and an organ . They sell season tickets for concerts of the Ulyanovsk State Symphony Orchestra "Popular classical music for the whole family”, and arrange series of concerts “Family evenings with Russian folk orchestra”.

The Concert Hall of the Ulyanovsk Philharmonic has 430 seats. In 1982, there was set an organ of the German firm "HOYLE" on the Philharmonic stage. This ancient musical instrument is still in effect and has 3 manuls, 42 registers and 2500 pipes. Here the prominent organists of the country and abroad give their concerts; the soloist of the Philharmonic gives the regular concerts as well.

In the Philharmonic all music fans can enjoy great symphonic compositions, the best examples of folk and brass band music, as well as ever-being compositions of organ masters. The Philharmonic stuff conducts systematic work on the musical education of children. All the musical bands of the Philharmonic give concerts in the districts of the region.

There are three major state orchestras in the Philharmonic.

Ulyanovsk State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Governor

The Ulyanovsk State Academic Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1968.
Due to the high level of performing the orchestra soon became known as the best band of the Volga region of Russia. Subsequently, having reached high professional standards, the Ulyanovsk State Symphony Orchestra became the winner of the All-Russia competition (1974), and then the winner of the All-Union Competition (1976) of professional orchestras of the Soviet Union. Today, the Orchestra line-up numbers 107 people. Each concert season the Orchestra gives over 65 concerts. Talented musicians of the orchestra have organized various instrumental ensembles that have become famous. Among them is the winner of the All-Union competition and 3 international competitions (including France and Germany contests) - a famous brass quintet “ Volga-brass”, a jazz brass band "Akademik-band” known in Russia and abroad, a string quartet and a chamber string orchestra.

In 1993 the Russian Ministry of Culture awarded the Orchestra the highest honorary title of "Academic", which is given only to the best and highly qualified professional orchestras of the country. In 2005 the orchestra received a new status - "of the Governor". The Ulyanovsk State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Governor is included in a group of creative collectives of Russia called "Star of Russia's province”. It belongs to the largest and most reputable non-capital Russian symphony orchestras.

The orchestra has a diverse repertoire. Its high creative potential explains the constant interest of the world-class performers and conductors to the Simbirsk orchestra. Many eminent Russian conductors gave concerts with the orchestra. Among them are Kirill Kondrashin, Evgeny Svetlanov, Vladimir Fedoseev, Fuat Mansurov, Yuri Temirkanov, Valery Gergiev, Mariss Jansons, as well as foreign conductors such as Olivier Kyuande (Switzerland), Maria Eklund (Sweden) and others. Mstislav Rostropovich worked with the orchestra as a soloist and as a conductor several times.

Prominent musicians have played with the orchestra. Among them are: pianists Nikolai Petrov, Evgeny Kissin, Nikolai Lugansky, violinists Igor Oistrakh, Oleg Kagan, Andrei Korsakov, Maxim Fedotov, cellists Natalia Gutman, Alexander Kniazev, Mark Drobinsky (France) and others, as well as the celebrated Russia's leading choirs such as: Russian State Academic Choir named after Sveshnikov, Russian Academic Choir named after A. Yurlov, the St. Petersburg Academic Choir named after M. Glinka, the State Academic Choir of Belarus, the Magnitogorsk State Academic Choir named after S. Eydinov, and others.

Throughout its history the Ulyanovsk regional Philharmonic Orchestra has participated in numerous music festivals in Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Baltic countries, the Urals, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. There were repeatedly conducted the visiting plenums of the Composers Union of the USSR and Russia, where the Orchestra had performed the premieres of many compositions of Russian composers: T. Khrennikov, Aram Khachaturian, A. Eshpai, B. Tchaikovsky, A. Babajanian, Frenkel, Kabalevsky - attended by the authors themselves.
The Orchestra has received wide recognition outside the Russian borders. The first foreign tour of the Orchestra was in 1975. The orchestra successfully presented its professional art in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, France (2003, 2004), Sweden and Norway (2004), Spain (2004-2008), Germany (2005), Switzerland ( 2007), Portugal (2008), Finland (2008).

The Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments was formed in 1984 due to the efforts of a group of enthusiasts headed by Yevgeny Fyodorov, now a permanent artistic director and principal conductor of the orchestra, an Honored Artist of Russia.
In 1991 in Nizhny Novgorod the musical band awarded first prize at the All-Russia competition of folk instrument orchestras. In 1993 the orchestra received the status of a state professional one, and in 1996 the orchestra became a part of the professional concert music organizations – the Ulyanovsk Oblast Philharmonic.
In 2001, the orchestra became a winner of the II International Festival of plucked Music "Pearl of the Volga Region” (Samara). In 2008 it won the Interregional Festival “The Volga flows into my heart” (Samara).
Famous conductors such as Nikolai Kalinin, a People's Artist of Russia, Honored Artists of Russia Viktor Kuznetsov, Anatoly Shutikov, Gennady Mironov and others have given concerts with our orchestra.
Moreover, well-known performers have given concerts together with the Ulyanovsk State Orchestra of Russian folk instruments. Among them are the People's Artists of Russia Mikhail Rozhkov (balalaika), Alexander Tsygankov (domra), Sergey Lukin (domra), Michael Gorobtsov (alto domra), Vyacheslav Semyonov (accordion), Sergei Baikov (bass) Anna Litvinenko (vocal); winners of international competitions Sergei Voitenko (accordion), Natalia Polyaninova (soprano), Vassily Pjanov (baritone), Gennady Kalmykov (harmonica) and others.
The orchestra have successfully toured in different cities of Russia: in Moscow, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Penza, Saratov, Orenburg, Tver.

Today the Ulyanovsk State Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments is considered reputable within the musical society, loved and respected by the audience. The orchestra team constantly works and actively helps the amateur and amateur musical bands of the region, and is considered the leader of the folk musical culture of the Ulyanovsk oblast.
The main trend of the creative activity of the orchestra is to develop and preserve Russian national culture, to promote high-performance skills of folk instrumental art. Over the years, there have been staged a large number of season programs for both adult and infant listeners.

The orchestra was formed in 2002. "Derzhava" is an indispensable participant of all the most significant events of the Ulyanovsk oblast: the opening of international festivals, championships, tournaments, forums, inter-regional trade shows and fairs, commemorative concerts, trade events, presentations and balls.
In 2003, the orchestra was recognized the best at the international festival of brass band league "Euroorchestria" - "Silver Trumpets". The orchestra "Derzhava" constantly performs with the outstanding composers, arrangers and soloists, including the Honored Artist of Russia Vladimir Kupriyanov, People's Artist of Russia Professor Valery Khalilov, Honored Artist of Russia Professor Benjamin Myasoedov, "The first trumpet of the world" - Steve Shannet (Canada).

The Repertoire of "Derzhava" includes original compositions for brass band: Russian marches, waltzes, contemporary works, works of Russian and foreign classics, pop and jazz compositions, Latin American music, favorite tunes from movies and television. For each concert season the orchestra prepares 8-10 new concert programs (among them "Great Russia", "Fiesta", "Hollywood Dreams", "Breath of Passion", "Bravo XX century", "Black Orchid", "Waltz revue," Flowers for the loved ", "Affectionate song of the surf"," Invincible and legendary ","Languid evening"," Love Story "and many others).

Ensemble "Volga-Brass"
 Leaders: Honored Artist of Russia Andrey Moskalev and Ivan Shilov.
It was formed in 1989. The ensemble includes the brass section of the Ulyanovsk State Academic Symphony Orchestra.
Its repertoire includes the Baroque music by Vivaldi, Bach, G. Handel, classical music by Mozart, Russian church music by D. Bortniansky, S. Rachmaninov, jazz and pop songs arranged for brass quintet, compositions by
V. Ewald, the founder of the "Brass Quintet" genre. The quintet is on creatively friendly terms with many famous musicians and composers.
The band have toured in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod and other cities of Russia, as well as abroad: in Germany, Britain, France, Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Poland, Slovenia, South Korea. It is
the winner of Russian and international festivals.

String Quartet under the leadership of Alexander Vinogradov.
The line-up of the String Quartet includes the leading musicians of the symphony orchestra string section. The repertoire of the Quartet is made up with the piano quintets by J. Brahms and R. Schumann, Shostakovich, S. Taneyev and Borodin.
The quartet works hard to promote the best examples of world music among the younger generation. There have been created musical compositions based on the ballets “Swan Lake”, “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty” by Tchaikovsky, the ballet “Cipollino” by Karen Khachaturian and “Children's Album” by Tchaikovsky.
The String Quartet of the Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Vinogradov is one of the most popular bands at various ceremonies and events of the city.

"Sadko", the State Ensemble of Russian songs and folk instruments under the leadership of Tamara Kulyabina. It was formed in 2002 by the leading musicians-soloists of the Ulyanovsk State Orchestra of Russian folk instruments. It is the winner of the International Folk Music Festival “Days of Slavic heritage” held in 2008 in Warsaw.
The ensemble's repertoire includes Russian folk songs, ballads, popular classical and folk music, original works by Russian composers, fantasies on folk melodies. The e
nsemble performs at the Philharmonic Hall, the Lenin Memorial, the Center for Popular Culture, in universities, colleges and high schools of Ulyanovsk, in the districts of the Ulyanovsk oblast, in the Volga cities.
The thematic programs created especially for pupils introduce the folk instruments, help the children to feel the beauty of folk art and acquaint them with the heroes of fairy tales, and reveal the harmony of words and music in the songs based on Russian poetry.

Jazz Ensemble "Opus" under the leadership of Vladimir Grishin
The ensemble was formed in 1988.
The band is the winner of national and international jazz festivals.
The repertoire of the band includes classic jazz music, as well as compositions by Vladimir Grishin. "Opus" performs versatile jazz programs and thematic jazz concerts. For pupils it has developed thematic programs, such as "Blue Bird", "We're from Jazz», «Modern-jazz concert», «In jazz, only children", designed to acquaint the young audience with the samples of world jazz classics, and various genres of jazz.

Jazz Ensemble "Akademik-Band" under the leadership of Nikolai Novichkov
The ensemble was formed in 1986 by the musicians of the Symphony Orchestra. "Academic-Band" is the winner of Russian and international festivals. The ensemble tours in the U.S.A. and Russia. The ensemble's repertoire includes jazz and popular entertaining compositions. The band has a thematic program "Discover the world of jazz" for performances in schools of the city and region. The concerts help pupils to become true lovers of music, but the main thing - children become a true cultural audience, which is listening the music actively and with interest, able to judge the music, and to determine their attitude to what they have heard.

String Chamber Ensemble under the leadership of Valentina Andryushchenko
The String Chamber Ensemble of the Ulyanovsk Regional Philharmonic was formed in 1974 by the leading musicians of the symphony orchestra.
The band gives concerts at the enterprises and educational institutions of the city: universities, colleges, high schools, school in the districts of the Ulyanovsk region. The String Chamber Ensemble is one of the most in-demand ensembles of the Philharmonic due to its concert program for young listeners.
The ensemble's repertoire includes the best samples of foreign and Russian classics. Especially for the younger generation they have created musical fairy tales based on "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" by Hans Christian Andersen's, "Puss in Boots" by C. Perot., "A train from Romashkovo", "The smallest Rain", "Cutter", "Where Sparrow have dined", "Cinderella”," Musical Journey ".

Traditional music festival "World - Age - Names"
The annual International Music Festival “World-age-names" is one of the most exciting cultural events of the city, whose participants are the Ulyanovsk Philharmonic Orchestras and the outstanding musicians and performers from Russia and abroad - the stars of classical music. During the festival there are concerts of different genres: symphonic, organ, folk and choral music.
A chance to listen to musicians of European and world level supports and promotes the interest of the general public to the philharmonic types of music.

Interregional Festival of Folk Music "Play and sing, my soul Volga "
The Festival helps to preserve the cultural heritage of Russia, to improve accessibility of cultural values, to preserve the authentic folk culture of the Volga region, to restore the traditional folk music,  rituals, customs and crafts - the unique cultural heritage of the Volga region. It helps to attract young people to the traditional folk arts.

The festival "Play and Sing, my soul Volga!" –is a bright musical celebration of folk art and a great event in cultural and public life of the Volga region, a creative project whose participants are Russian leading artists in the genre of folk music, the Ulyanovsk State Orchestra of Russian folk instruments, art groups of the Ulyanovsk oblast. The festival includes master classes, round tables on the development and preservation of traditional regional culture and song traditions of the Volga region. It gives a unique chance to play on traditional musical instruments of the Volga region. The festival concerts are held in all districts of the Ulyanovsk oblast and are accompanied by exhibitions of folk crafts and traditional crafts of the Volga region.
